Flood Plain | Mississippi River
The Driftless area of La Crosse, Wisconsin is unique in its island-like delta formations on the Mississippi River which developed over thousands of years. The glacial meltwater from the last Ice Age carried sediment into the wide flood plain of the Upper Mississippi causing these sinuous patterns.
As rivers like the La Crosse enter slower-moving waters, they deposited sand, silt, and gravel, creating a complex landscape of braided channels, alluvial islands, and wetland sloughs.
This image was captured early in the morning and was a short walk from my stunning campsite found via Hipcamp, my first time using the app. Owned by a local farmer, the campsite was stockpiled with firewood and sat on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi. This was one of those sunrises you don’t forget.
